AmeriCorps NCCC Class XI (Round 3, September 2005)
Katrina - Disaster Relief
Brookhaven & McComb, Mississippi

Of AmeriCorps 73,000 national members, 1,100 are part of the NCCC which are trained in first aid, diaster relief and team building. NCCC teams were among the first federal relief groups sent to the Gulf Coast. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, AmeriCorps stationed 80 percent of its National Civilian Community Corps on the Gulf. NCCC teams were deployed to Alabama and Mississippi to help set up shelters within a day after Katrina made landfall, showing greater alacrity than FEMA. In New Orleans, the AmeriCorps members lived on the floors of churches and in volunteers’ houses in order to fulfill their year of service. Organizations like the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity and local non-profit groups are lent NCCC teams for particular projects.
